"The Shadow."
His reply is terse, and almost but not quite hostile.

{{Jeez. I'm away for a day and look what happens.}} Esther sighed, apparently forgotten by the two fighters and the strange woman in the window. Well, that won't last long. She sheathed her sword and clambered into the window, narrowly avoiding an arrow that would have pierced her back. Howl was lying on the ground, weaponless and with a dark bruise on his shoulder. A tall woman holding a long sword and a man dressed in black with a handome face-- the same man who was on the glider earlier-- were facing off. What the heck have I gotten myself into?

The Shadow glances briefly at Esther, deems her irrelevant, and returns his attention to Athena.

((I -think- that Howl is unconscious/sleeping/ignoring everyone. Unless he springs up and announces he's fine, Athena will keep ignoring him.))
Athena blinked and turned halfway towards the newcomer. "...No one is supposed to notice that window," she says, sulking. "I prefer to write battles in peace. Although," she adds, contemplative. "this is a nice change of pace."

The Shadow's face remains impassive. He clearly has no idea how to react to Athena.

"My name," says Athena slowly, tasting each word separately on her tongue. "is Athena." She figures it's a fair trade of names. She considers stopping time and relieving the girl behind her of her sword, and then decides it's too much effort.

"-Writing- battles?" Esther says. "As in everything that's going on outside is being written down? For your own entertainment?" She considers this. "That's pretty smart, I suppose. It would make a nice epic. I would appreciate a copy when you finish it." Her tone makes it clear this is not a choice. She turns to the black-clad man. "And may I ask who you are?"

The Shadow turns to Esther. He slowly looks her up and down twice. Then he silently returns his attention to Athena.

Athena bristles a little at her job being brushed away as 'mere entertainment'. "I'm an archivist," she says, tone harsh. "I don't write for my own entertainment, I write because things need to be written, so that we can remember." So I can study it, and see which mistakes you've made, and which I will not let my own faction make. she adds, silently to herself. "And you don't get a copy, just because you want one." Then, turning, she speaks to the air. "Yes, I know," she snaps, very irritated now. "Shut up."

Esther instantly feels her temper rise. "Oh, you're an ARCHIVIST, are you? Well, I beg your pardon, Your Majesty. I didn't realize your work was so IMPORTANT." She walks up to Athena and jabs her in the chest. "Listen, Your Highness, I'm a Librarian. I know just as much-- and probably more-- about literature and learning than you will ever know. And I can definitely assure you that I would easily defeat you in battle." She draws her sword partway out of its scabbard, thinks about it, and decides against it, sheathing the blade. "Now if you'll excuse me, I've got an unconscious friend to help."

Ignoring Esther for the moment, Athena turns again to the air. "You owe me." she points out to the air, and then -- "No, I don't care where you get your money from, as long as it's not from me." She then turns to Esther and Howl, contemplating for a moment, and then points out, almost petulantly, "You haven't even said 'hello'."

Esther, slightly put out by this woman ignoring her tirade, growled quietly. "Who are you talking to and why can't we see them?" When Athena ignores her, Esther growls again. "Would you prefer I slice his invisible body into bite-size chunks? I'm sure the rooks will be happy for an extra snack." She bites her tongue, restraining the magic that is bursting to come out and smack the Archivist upside the head.

Athena blinks for a moment. "This is Lailoken," she explains, "and he isn't here."
